Pakistan poll finds Taliban support

The US polling group, Pew Research Centre, has done a survey in Pakistan to determine how Pakistanis view the Taliban and other terrorist groups.
While the general public still views the Taliban as a threat, the survey found, they are regarded more favourably than last year.
The results indicated that US drone strikes had caused resentment and most Pakistanis want the US to withdraw troops from Afghanistan.
Just 15 per cent of Pew's respondents approved of the Taliban but 18 per cent expressed favorable views of al-Qaeda.
Last year, ten per cent of respondents approved of the Taliban and nine per cent approved of al-Qaeda.
The poll, which was taken in main urban areas, discovered that the number of Pakistanis calling the Taliban and al-Qaeda a serious threat had declined.
Fifty-one per cent of respondents said they were worried or very worried about extremist groups having control of the country, down from 69 per cent last year.
More than half of respondents called India their greatest threat.
The poll did not involve residents of the Federally Administered Tribal Areas, which have seen most of the fighting between the government and armed groups from the Taliban and al-Qaeda.  Email this story to a friend

Paki’s! The main threat to you is not India but fanatic cretin muslims in your own ranks. But that’s what you want - so enjoy Taliban rule. nothing can stop the momentum of sharia now.

I agree with you Mr. JaiRam. The Islamic puritanical policies of Alqaueda and Talibans really don’t cut in this day and age. Having said that, Talibans have a great thing going for them and that is swift justice and their social work. Where as, for example, an ordinary land dispute in preset civil courts takes minimum of 10 years to resolve that also then goes to all the way to supreme court for another 10 years with great expenses. and the disputing parties frequently die out. The Talibans resolve these in less than a day. The bad thing about these people is there code of conduct and treatment of women. When they were ruling Afghanistan, the crime rate dropped down to almost zero but the women were out of school. If Talibs first reform themselves and inject in their behavior some modernity they can become very popular. Let me assure you they can never achieve governance in Pakistan. People of Pakistan will never let them have their say in our society without a change in their behavior. And that is what is reflected in these poles. Lateness in justice and social injustices as well as corruption is as prevalent in India as with us. I hope one day we both will have better days.
