Inshore Rescue Boat stations across British Columbia open for 2026 recreational boating season

May 15, 2026 - Victoria, British Columbia - National Defence / Canadian Coast Guard

The Canadian Coast Guard's seasonal inshore rescue boat stations across British Columbia will open on the following dates:

  • May 16: Cortes Bay, Cortes Island
  • May 16: Sointula, Malcolm Island
  • May 16: Nootka Sound
  • May 16: Kelsey Bay
  • June 9 - July 21: Vancouver (temporary station during the FIFA World Cup 2026)

Inshore rescue boat stations are primarily crewed by post-secondary students hired and trained by the Canadian Coast Guard. They provide additional maritime search and rescue service during the busy summer recreational boating season.

Waterways remain very cold at this time of year and take much longer to warm up when compared to the air. Boaters are reminded to take necessary precautions when near or on waterways. Transport Canada's Safe Boating Guide is an excellent source of information in preparation for the recreational boating season.

Emergencies on the water can be reported 24 hours a day, 365 days a year by using channel 16 via marine VHF radio or by calling the regional emergency line: Report a search and rescue incident - Canada.ca
